Halloween09

[ M O R E  I N F O ]

The decaying corpse of our world has been embalmed, dressed, made up & presented as the shimmering gold “change”---and it is not solely the sinister Obama sloganeering that shares the guilt. Despite the continual sinking into further & further depths of economic, social & aesthetic depravity, the machine of apologia continue to herald the new age and improved millennia of technological wonder & new artistic growth. The gentrification of culture---conformability, comfort, ease, & positivity--- is engaged in a vicious protracted war against pleasure & chance with the same beaming, white smiles of their televised representatives & assuring us that an easier way is here---but always wielding a dagger beneath the cloak. It is these gurus of compulsory conformity that have blunted the edge of daily life, of risk-taking, mystifying unpredictability that shakes the soul out of it’s slumber and gives definition and character to life---and it is these same wretches that continue to paint our growing woes with the shinny, happy colors of dead art. The overwhelming cheer of false hope has drowned out any opposition to its rule, and we’re left denying ourselves the danger, risk & uncertainty of true experience and real living.

There are, however, a few vestiges of free, spirited expression left, the remaining rejects of this really terrifying reformulation & redecoration of our cultural landscape. One specific day than any other marks the direct opposition to the glossification. A morbid celebration of jest, play, consumption, and overall the free-hearted & potentially volatile embracing of the lower impulses: HALOWE’EN---that Dionysian celebration of the unconcerned pleasure, the love of pleasure over reservation and prudence, pleasure as God for a day; moreover, in a more abstract sense, the acceptance of death, destruction & cruelty as a integral aspect of daily life---a coming to terms and acceptance that takes place over the carousing of one day out of the year. Halloween is the only time where the dispensing of ego in favor of anonymous revelry is sanctioned, expected, even encouraged. It is the fascination with morbidity, gore, death & rebirth through the magically reviving antidote of amusement & self-gratification that makes it a worthy ally in the fight against mediocrity and higher
respectability.

“Samhain: Hallowe’en”: Dope Jams pays homage to the darkness & impulsivity of the human spirit, pillaging the lowest chasms of dance and rock sin/depravity, raising them from the graveyards of esoteric musical lineage, and assembling the most grotesque, menacing & unholy collection of sound the netherworld has to offer: a celebration of the unspoken darkness of our world, a beast that is very much present, and only grows more powerful when ignored---and yet, it is a tamable beast, one that need only be harnessed for it’s explosive energy & set to the task of releasing & expanding pleasure. In this sense, “Samhain” is very much serious; serious in it’s complete denial of the grave falsity of the never-ending assault of the degenerate cheer of “the future”---and serious in it’s demand for the this cheer be replaced, at least for one day, by the dirty, filthy and overall joyous celebration of truth that is Hallowe’en.
